Our Kennel Facility
Cabeza
Grande Kennel is located on 5+ sprawling acres in the countryside of
southern Illinois. We are surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of acres of
farmland with no neighbors to bother us. Our dogs have the run of many of
the acres and also have a lake in which they enjoy swimming.
Puppy and Growing Dog Kennels
We have 8x16 foot Kennels with indoor/outdoor
access and insulated, cedar lined dog houses lined with gravel for the young
and growing dogs. We feel gravel is better on an unformed joint.
Adult Dog Kennels
We have 8x20 foot kennels with gravel floors.
These are still in the building phase and will eventually be
concrete with insulated, cedar lined dog houses. We find that a
longer, skinnier kennel facilitates more room to run and a more active dog.
Dog Houses
Our
dog houses are made from plywood, using double panels and thick insulation
in between. The dog houses are also built into the side of the kennel
building. They are lined with cedar boards to rid them of insects and other
parasites. In the winter they are stuffed so full of straw, the dog has to
burrow his way into it. This ensures the dog has little excess room to heat
and can stay warm even in very cold temperatures. They are also equipped
with swinging doggy doors and hard plastic heat mats.
Quarantine Kennels
We have 2 - 6x12 foot kennels separated from
the others to keep new arrivals or dogs/pups who have contracted any illness
that might be contagious.
Whelping Boxes
Our whelping mothers enjoy 4x8 foot whelping
boxes lined with linoleum and sealed with silicone to insure ease of
cleaning and sanitation. They are resealed and bleached between uses.
Exercise Runs
Our
dogs are let out on 120 x 20 foot runs for daily exercise, weather permitting.
These are made with heavy duty plastic coated cable and pulley systems and
give them a lot of room to run. They are next to another dog so often they
run and play with each other the entire day. This is how we maintain such
good shape of our dogs without any 'professional' type conditioning. They
are also run next to a bike, do weight pull and agility on a regular basis.
These exercise runs are also very handy for
taking pictures. It contains the dog, they want to be with you so you stand
back, make noises and snap away.
