Care Tips for the Presa Canario

Long held up as a national symbol of strength in their homeland of the Canary Islands, the Presa Canario is fast becoming one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. Presa Canarios are prized for their unique talent as working dogs, their unparalleled loyalty and their sweet and gentle demeanor.

There’s so much to love about the Presa. Still, ensuring they are cared for properly is a task to which not everyone may be suited. Before you invest in a Presa Canario, here are some tips to keep them healthy and happy for the long haul.

Washing and brushing

One of the benefits of owning a Presa Canario is its low cleaning maintenance. The dog’s short coat sheds a little bit, but far less than most dogs of its size. More often than not, short weekly brushes can eliminate a fair amount of hair that might otherwise end up on the carpet. Shedding may increase during the spring and fall (as is the case with most breeds).

Beyond the occasional bath, the Presa Canario’s most pressing need when it comes to grooming is regular nail trimmings. The breed’s quick-growing nails can split and crack if left unattended.

A dog with taste

Like most breeds of its size, the Presa Canario is happiest when fed a diet of high protein items. Ideally, owners have the free time to feed their beloved Presa a diet of eggs, fish and lean meats, but if not, high-quality dry food can get the job done, too. Be sure to avoid a generic dry dog food, however, as most do not have the protein levels required to sustain the Presa Canario.

On average, a full-grown Presa Canario can be expected to consume a little over two pounds of fresh food every day.

One enthusiastic pup

Thanks in part to its history of work in the fields, the Presa Canario needs regular exercise to stay happy. Owners should expect to take their pup on at least two 20- to 30-minute walks every day. The average Presa Canario is also an avid game player. A routine game of fetch or tug of war will help them release energy without turning to thoughts of destruction.

When they’re not defending the family or running off some energy, Presa Canarios are typically calm, level-headed dogs who are prone to lying about.

A Presa Canario resource and ally

These wondrous animals can serve as treasured protectors, partners on the job or just a good, old-fashioned family pup. If you’re up for the task of taking care of them, they’ll take care of you right back.
